People may lack motivation for some of the following reasons:

  • They think that all the effort in the world won’t let them achieve what they would like.

They don’t have a clear idea about what they would like

Fear of failing because of past failures.

Sheer feeling of hopelessness due to depression caused by various factors.

The thought that we are going to die someday anyway so what's the point.

Let me illustrate a point with a little story told by Parmahansa Yogananda

Two frogs fell into a bucket of milk.  The bucket was quite deep so there was no way they could get out.   Through natural instinct they started swimming.  One frog thought there is no way we can get out of this so might as well give up.  So he gave up and of  course death followed. The second frog thought “I am probably going to die any way but let me keep swimming as long as I can then at least I will have the satisfaction that I tried  my best until the end and I might just discover something that I don’t know.”  So he kept swimming and swimming and swimming with all his might.  At this point his tiny little legs got really tired.   He got to a point where he could not swim any more and to his amazement he found that all his continuous swimming had churned the milk into butter. He stepped on the butter and leaped out.

The moral of the story is that if we keep trying as long as we can, then the divine grace comes to us, granting us clarity and direction to make the next move in life.   Life is a dance between us and the divine.  We move and he moves.  He cannot dance on his own.
